Help with mounting a pickup on my resonator

So I ordered a neck mount humbucker and decided to mount it on my resonator the way Sollophonic did on one of his. Well, it's about 1/16" too tall, so I cant mount it on the top beneath the strings. So I tried mounting it under the cover plate and the coverplate caused the pickup to be extremely quiet. Sollophonic and a friend of mine recommended mounting it under the top of the guitar, and I tried that, the the neck stick goes almost all the way down to the soundwell. There is about a 3/4" gap there. So if I was to drill into the top, I've only got 3/4" to put a pickup without cutting in to the neck stick and soundwell. Any ideas on how else I could mount a pickup, or am I pretty much SOL?

Image

The distance between the pickup and the string is so small that the strings rattle on the pickup when I strum.

I mounted the pickup on the back of the coverplate but it didn't work.

The gap between the soundwell and the neck stick is outlined in black.

Have you considered cutting a slot in the cover plate to mount the pickup alá the National Hot Plate ?

You could buy a second cover plate and cut a hole through it for the pickup, that would work. However I think mounting it between the neck and coverplate would look and work best.
Such a coincidence, I just put an Epiphone pickup into my Ensenada resonator covnersion. I love the sound, very brite!

I have considered this, but it makes me wonder if the coverplate will cause interference as it did when the pickup was under it. I would much rather route the coverplate than the body though. How would I go about cutting the coverplate?

It would definitely look best and that's what I would like to do, but if I drill through the top I only have 3/4" of space without routing into the neck stick or the soundwell. That reso looks great!

What brand reso, and what brand pickup? Curious minds would like to have the story! Not that the curious will help, but we'd like the story anyway...

The reso is an Epiphone Biscuit wood bodied reso. The pickup is one of the slim neck-mount Artec pickups. I got it off eBay for $24 shipped to my door from Hong Kong. It took a couple weeks to make it here, but it made it. It wasn't a total waste of money though. It will fit on my archtop guitar perfectly, so I'll use it on that when I get this one done.

I think I've pretty much decided that since I can't get this humbucker to fit anywhere, I'm going to route out the coverplate. :wha: I drew up a trace of a single coil Strat pickup I have on the back of the coverplate. I might bust out the Dremel and go to town. The pickup would get mounted like the pickups are mounted in Strats and it would float above the cone. We'll see. At least if I manage to mess up the coverplate really bad I can always order a new one.

Thanks!, I would go ahead and rout out the space you need, the structure can probably handle it. However, measure, calculate and draw an actual size diagram to help your planning and decisions. It looks hard but, “If you save your breath I feel a man like you can manage it.” (from, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).

I have a Flatbucker that's about half that thick. The Lace ultra slim is just a hair thicker than mine, and I think that would work on yours. The Flatbucker is made in Germany, or Italy, fergit which... and you can order it from busker guitars. http://www.buskerguitars.co.uk/shop/page/15?shop_param=

Of course, it's ermmm... a bit more than 25 bucks shipped....

Dude, you could use sleeves around long mounting screws and put the pickup ABOVE the strings! Might look funny, but it'd work.

If the Lace is just a hair thicker than your pickup, then that's still too thick, methinks. The Lace is the same height as the neck mount that I bought.

Rico, I could mount a pickup above the strings, but that would look awful and make the guitar awkward. What you do with your Johnson is your business, though. :wha:

Testify my brother! I used to think that I had to have a pickup also. Been around the block on that.
A decent condenser mic is all I need.

Oh yes! or 2/3 in the studio! I've not tried a ribbon on a reso yet...

Well I routed out the coverplate to accept a Tele neck pickup. I wired it all up, but there's a terrible hum. Would the metal cover of the pickup touching the coverplate be the culprit? Whenever I touch the coverplate it makes a slight popping sound.

Sounds like it may be inadequately grounded, but in the pic it looks like it should be grounded OK.
