Buddy Guy Autographed Strat...Oh yeah

Postby muggs » Sat Mar 11, 2006 3:27 am

Ok here is the story....

My father had worked with this guy for 15 years and he claimed to be a collector of guitars. He would always boast of his collection to my father. Finally, he was telling my father about his custom shop Fenders. My father indicated he would like to see them. Well, he invited my father and I over to check out his collection. He has about 100 guitars. Custom Gibson’s, Custom Gretsch’s, Custom Fenders and many Hamer guitars. Then he pulled out 2 cases. He opens the first case and pulls out an American Deluxe Stratocaster, White on White, Rosewood Fingerboard. He hands it to me and I could tell immediately it had never been played. He then tells me to turn it over and look at the back. To my surprise, it was autographed by Buddy Guy! I was shocked to say the least. Turns out, Buddy Guy was in town doing a concert(don’t know when). Since he was a guitar collector who had spent lots money at all the local shops, he had some contacts. He landed backstage passes. The night of the show he went out and purchased the Strat and had Buddy Guy autograph it. Why am I telling this story? Well.... he just sold it to me :)

What was in the 2nd case? Similar story....Only a Sunburst Strat Autographed by Jimmie Vaughan. My father now owns that one:)

That's cool!

Of course, I'd play it, and the autograph would eventually wear off...

couldn't you (have somebody)put a protective coat over the autograph? Or do you have severe belt buckle rash on your guitars?

I don't have belt buckle rash on any of my guitars. My tummy protects them from contact with the buckle.

A luthier once lent me his Lowdon acoustic while mine was being worked on.
It was autographed by Robert Plant.
After a gig, I wiped it down with some lemon oil, and accidently wiped off half the autograph.
It was written with felt pen.
I was going to fill in the gaps myself, but I just owned up instead.
Aye curumba!

Frankly, I don't want anybody else writing on one of my guitars.

I don't know... I might let Rory Block write on my Johnson.

LightninBoy. Finish the story please. Robert Plant is a big name and should be worth some money after he dies. What did your friend do, are you two even friends now? My view point is simple, if I had Plants name on anything it would not be used or lended out. I would not use that strat with Buddy Guy on it either. My guitarist is a Lynard Skynard freak. He has a Les Paul that every band member signed for him. That guitar is never played. Plans on having a glass case made for it so he can show the guitar off.

Rubbin' off Robert Plants name, that's a hoot.
Tell us the end.

BigDaddy,
thats about all that happened.
Bob didn't really say much about it.
We were never really friends, he owned the local music shop in Ballina, and did guitar repairs. More like good business aquaintances.
I suppose we're still on talking terms, no worries!
I didn't think lemon oil would rub off permanant marker so easily.
It only half came off, the other half is still ok.
Once I seen it coming off I stopped.
---ert --ant, or something like that, lol.
To be honest, I don't really think he gave a rats about it.
I was only trying to be nice, and clean it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Mar-12-06 AT 12:38 PM (EST)]Well since the signature is on the spring cover...I can remove it and easily preserve it.

I look at it like this. It is an instrument. It was built for the creation of music. It would be a crime to not play it. With that said, if the signature was on the body...the contents of this post would be much different. I would probably leave it on display in my music room. But since I can preserve the signature, why not enjoy the guitar?

I own 2 Les Pauls and 1 other Strat. I don't need to play it ....I want to hehe. It was signed by Buddy Guy lol.

I think I may take a picture of the guitar and place the picture with a photo of Buddy Guy along with the autographed spring cover in a frame.
