Frank Stokes' Lyrics Question

Postby the_big_crunch » Tue May 09, 2006 3:49 pm

I recently learned “It Won’t Be Long Now” from the Grossman DVD. He teaches a version of the melodic “breakdown” that occurs between the verses, which are mostly brushstroked with some basic double stop rhythm work. I was tryin’ to learn the lyrics, but some of them are just incomprehensible to my ears. I could just make up my own lyrics or borrow from another tune (Stokes himself sure re-used a ton of blues lyrics in his recordings), but I’ve listened to this song enough times by now that I’m really obsessed with trying to figure out what he’s singing. Here’s what I have, with the vague spots highlighted by question marks or blank spaces (or both); if you have any ideas, please post ‘em.

It Won’t Be Long Now

One of these mornin’s mama and it won’t be long
One of these mornin’s mama and it won’t be long
You gonna miss your good man rollin’ in your arms

I’m goin’, I’m goin’, now what you want me to bring you back
I’m goin’, I’m goin’, what you want me to bring you back
________________________________ (no idea what he’s sayin’ here)

I don’t want no gravy, mama when the gravy gets cold
I don’t want no gravy, mama when the gravy gets cold
Don’t want no bad luck woman, ain’t got no place to go

You’ll miss your baby, rollin’ in your arms
You’re gonna miss your baby, rollin’ in your arms
If you don’t come and see me, count the days I’m gone

And I’m goin’ I’m goin’, ?(hang a blank slate)? on your door
I’m goin, I’m goin’, ?(hang a blank slate)? on your door
Tell ‘em your man ain’t dead, just ain’t comin’ here no more

Now when you lay down at night, lay down early tryin’ take your rest
When you lay down at night, lay down early tryin’ take your rest
You ?(gonna crawl up by)? four o’clock and try to do your best

[updated:LAST EDITED ON May-09-06 AT 01:27 PM (EST)]According to RR Macleod;
Verse 2 line 3: 'Mama, think what I'm carryin' away, somethin' that you good gals like'

Verse 5 lines 1 & 2:'I'm goin, I'm goin', pin a black crepe on your door'

Verse 6 line 3: 'You'll get a call 'bout four o'clock, wake up & try to do your best'

hope this helps'
