I said "ditto", but in truth I don't bother nowadays; generally speaking, I was finding that the main difference between a plain or wrapped 3rd was that the plain was stiffer.

However, I still buy all my strings in the USA, cos I can get singles of the type I like; I buy them by the ten, and have them posted to a friend over there who then sends them to me. (Otherwise the mailing costs far out-weigh the cost of the strings!)

But replacing the third of a set with whatever you fancy isn't going to cost you more than a quid or so.

I changed to plain 3rd around .026 on my Strat, I used to break wound as I use open E.

Ditto again on making up your own sets to suit your needs.

FWIW, The only time I ever really appreciated the unwound G was tuning up to E or A on my Delphi. When I did that, I'd get a set of Pearse New Mediums (ie 13 17 24w 32 42 55) and replace the 24w with a 22 plain. The only reason I did it was because the 24w broke very easily when tuned up and down a few times. Otherwise, unwound thirds do nothing for me. I'm guessing Furry, Bukka and Senior Hammond will slap me around in the afterlife.
