Hello,

I have a question that may be unanswerable but I thought I'd throw it out here and see what I get.

I play slide just for my own enjoyment and have been playing for about 1 1/2 year so I do not know much about guitar as far as tone, setups, etc.

I have a ESP e-350 and it does ok. I have 11-50? strings on it and I tune to open E. My son used to play and his Jackson Explorer from a few years back was just sitting on the rack. I tuned it to ope D and gave it a whirl. I love the sound I got with it not to mention the easy access to frets like an SG. It has like 9's on it and action about as low as you can get. I'd love to be able to get that sound out of a guitar that was better suited for slide, This thing has the Floyd Rose and all that so I don't think modding this one with stop tail is the way to go. My main question is there any chance it is in the pickups? If I thought I could get that sound by putting the pickups in my e-350 I would give it a whirl. I know I may have to just do it to know but thought I'd ask first. I'm using a Mustang I amp. Love that thing. For around the house I think it is a great amp. Got it new for $79.00 tax and all!

Thanks,
T.

I'm guessing the "it" is the tone you're after. A lot is going to be personal preference. Mine is toward a warmer tone from "Hotter" p'ups. What's in the 335 for P'ups now? You could try hotter p'ups, although I don't know how they'd behave in a semi-hollow. Plus, there's pretty bight guitars to begin with.

I played mostly SG's for slide, but never had one set up for slide (heavier strings, higher action.) I've been playing Tele's as of late, and wound up getting a plain vanilla SG for the warmer tone. Oddly enough, I ended up getting a Tele set up for slide. It does have Barden p'ups, which are pretty hot. With the right settings, it will get a pretty warm tone. (I'm not sure that this clip completely does it justice, but here's a little sample of it (on the slide solo only):
