Jolene learned "corinna corinna" first i think. we found a book of public domain songs and sort of went through it back then. stuff like "bad luck blues" and "new stranger blues", and on to some newer stuff like "wait on time", a few jimmy reed songs, some wolf, a bit of muddy, etc etc.

The first blues song I liked enough to play over and over, taught me ALLOT about music theory.
It is: Messing With The Kid.

If you call it blues then it was Eric Clapton's "Before You Accuse Me" off Journeyman in the 1990's

That's definitely blues.
When he does it unplugged he uses lots of riffs from the old blues guys.

I don't know if it qualifies but SRV's Mary Had A Little Lamb was probably the first tune I sat down to work through. I think it was tabbed out in Guitar Player or something. I didn't have the good fortune of receiving much instruction in my youth...small town, etc. so most of what I started to pick up came from sitting in at blues jams over the years.

In reality I came to the blues backwards from listening to ZZ Top, Clapton, Zeppelin, Stones etc. It might be fun to teach the original and cover songs that transitioned across like Bring it on Home, Crossroads, Levee Breaks, etc

Thanks! Similar road here. I had a teacher who taught mostly folk/country finger-style and flatpicking. He gave me a pretty good start. A lot of blues I heard from second generation players like JOhnny WInter, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, etc.. Had great teacher in high school who gave me some great background in jazz and blues. I went off to college and got pulled in a bunch of different directions but the blues influence survived it all.
