Calling Australia!

Nothin' to do with blues? The name says it all. You might try e-mail or Personal Message, but if those don't work for you, put it here, not in the blues forums above. Thanks!

Did someone say something?

Is there supposed to be a cricket match on?

Lucky we've got some bowlers that can bat or it would be even more embarrassing - pity we haven't got any batsmen that can bowl (or even bat)

There's no shortage of people willing to offer a new trophy - Ponting's Ashes! Could he be the first captainin 120 years to lose three Ashes series?

Apologies to all Americans and others that don't relate to this unusual sport and the phenomenal rivalry between the English and Australian cricket sides that has developed slowly over the last 150 years or so.

That Johnson's in a purple patch right now; England ended up 81 behind after the 1st innings, largely at his hands. Ponting has to be careful about overusing him though, in case of injury.

Ponting can only deal with the team at his disposal and no amount of head chopping and changing will cure the body's weakness underneath it. Added to this is his own apparent lack of form. One particular missed catch makes me wonder if his sight is what it was, together with the reflexes.

Whatever happens, Oz should never forget his batsmanship or his leadership. Hell of a player.

Our family used to have some friends who were from England and lived Stateside for many years and brought a cricket set camping with us one year. I was about 9 or 10 and spent many hours over a few days playing cricket. It was so much fun!

WhiIst I vigorously abstain from gloating in the Antipodean fashion, it gives me the most enormous pleasure to announce to the BRB population at large that the lions England have retained the Ashes with a crushing victory over the galahs of Australia.

Maxx It's your time to gloat. The Poms have put together a fine cricketing lesson on how to play test cricket.
But we will be back big and stronger. You can't be on top forever. Aussie's have been there for a long time
now see if you can beat the sth africian and indians

All things change. Much of the current improvement in English cricket seems to stem from the Australian example of investing in development and then applying the skills and discipline on the field.

India has a huge population and therefore more choice of high class players. The South Africans eat raw babies dipped in chilli sauce. There may well be a lag before England find the keys to those locks.

I'd leave Ponting as captain for a while and give him something to whip into shape as a team; no point cutting off the head while the body needs remedying.

Thank God the pain and embarrasment is over at last!

3 innings + losses!

Oh well I'll have to go and see what the Prime Minister's XI can do in a one-dayer on Monday. Couldn't be any worse!

The prime Minister's XI will probably win, as the England team will still be shaking violently from alcohol poisoning.

Strauss claims they're nowhere near their peak yet; will this be yet another brief winter's sun, or will they eventually bask in the long lazy days of summery success? Watch this space.

Finally, with no malice at all, some closing comments:

What do you call an Australian with a champagne bottle?
Waiter!

What do you call a world class Aussie batsman?
Retired.

There is a word for an Aussie player with 100 runs against his name.
Bowler.

The Aussie supporters were still there on the last day.
In fancy dress.
As plastic chairs.

And for anyone with a passing knowledge of Caledonian football, to the tune of Men Of Harlech,
"Are you Scotland, are you Scotland, are you Scotland in disguise?"

As ever, that defining English characteristic, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory/

But you can't upset me. Why? Because on both sides of my family, we are famine dodgers. I'm a genetic Mick. So my boys won.

By the way, where are you going on holiday this year? Pakistan?

AH yes, but at least we were defeated by a genuine cricket team rather than the guys who got picked last for hurling.

I bow to your expertise in this area. Australians are well known throughout the world for hurling.

It seems we're also quite good at hurling captains off the bridge...
