What about those little image things that have the letters and numbers in them? Like when you buy something off the internet it asks you to type what you see in the box, and often times the letters are crooked and wavy.

Those things suck. Half the time I get 'em wrong, apparently, because the thing will just come back with a new one and I have to keep trying. I understand there are bots capable of dealing with them now.

They're called captchas, and we have one here. It doesn't work: the spammers wrote OCR (optical character recognition) software to defeat PHPBB's captcha.

Besides, they suck. What if we have Blind Willie Johnson try to join?

Text based Turing tests are much better (a Turing test is designed to tell a computer respondent from a human one).

As fun as this is I think it limits who can register in the forum too much. For instance, what about the poor guy who wants to ask about 12 bar blues? I've put in a bunch of mostly numeric questions ("I had 50 chickens but sold half of them, how many do I have?"), that should keep the bots out for now. Eh... famous las words :).

I'm having a hard time thinking of questions that only a blues fan (not necessarily a musician type) would know but also every blues fan would know. If we could come up with a handful of those maybe that would work.

There's a weekly music quiz TV show on Oz's PBS equivalent (except its a good channel!) that has two teams, each with a consistent lead and two guests each week. On their 'Best of 2007' highlights show last night, one of the questions was:
'Famous blues guitarist John Lee ........'
One of the guests buzzed in and answered "Mellencamp"
His team lead and partner walked out in disgust.

Finding a question everyone knowds the answer to is obviously very difficult!

You might want to include some type of "preamble" explaining why the security question is necessary. I also noticed that there is still a "type in the security code" box, which I thought you said was virtually worthless in stopping "bots".
