Suggestion to raise cash

Postby hashtaff » Wed Sep 21, 2005 12:04 am

The latest fashion craze (here in Oz at least ) is the wearing of wrist bands such as the Lance Armstrong "Live Strong " yellow ones to support charities causes etc. I am currently wearing intertwined black and white bands in support of ant-racism.
Well here's my idea:

A Blue wrist band with suitable logo such as "Keeping The Blues Alive" and of course the name of our sponsor - Coast to Coast.
the usual cost of these is in the order of a couple of bucks. Money raised could go to supporting the site and perhaps a percentage go to supporting the Blues artists displaced by the recent tragic events in New Orleans.
Thus anyone buying and wearing one of these is helping promote blues, supporting our favourite internet hang out and lending a hand to our less fortunate blues brethren.

Just a thought- I'll take ten.

There are lots of them over here as well... Pretty meaningless, as no-one ever asks what they're about any more, never mind read what's written on them (there's always the danger of being asked to support whatever fund, if any, is being represented).

Blue would be shared with:
Teens Against Smoking
Epstein-Barr Virus
Alopecia
Colitis
Save the Music
Colon Cancer
Water Quality
Colorectal Cancer
Crohn's Disease
ME/CFIDS
Dystonia
Free Speech
Reye's Syndrome
Hystiocytosis
Ichthythosis
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Interstitial Cystitis
Short Bowel Syndrome
Victim's Rights
Water Safety
Beat Bullying
Autism Awareness
Wisconsin Anti-Child Abuse Movement
Lutheran Church of the Cross
Skating Boy" (sic - I don't know, either!)
Mums Against The Illegal Invasion Of Iraq
Protect Badgers
I Planted A Tree
Kerry 2004
Take Control (Arthritis Foundation)....
Asbestos Awareness.....
And many, many more.

At up to £2 a shot, but dropping to half this if you buy a thousand or so, they could give around 75p profit per band (allowing for postage).

How about this: if you want to support BRB fiscally, give the £2 to the BRB directly. If you are willing to buy ten, then a direct contribution of £20 will do much more good than feeding those making a fortune out of a worn-out, passing craze, and you'll get a little blue ribbon after your name every time you post.

Blue notes, actually.

I'll be damned if I'm going to wear a silly little colored bracelet or ribbon to support ANY cause. I despise those things.

Is this some new euphemism, failing to understand which reveals my shocking degree of unhipness?

Hey,it was only a suggestion. We may be backward here but the bands are not yet ubiquitous and still cool.
I wasn't asking for suggestions as to how personally support the BRB as I already do this. It was more of an idea for more broad-based support both for the BRB and the blues community . Hats or shirts would work for me juat as well.

Ricochet, I don't understand why you are so opposed to bands.

I'd be really happy to have just one person I could play music with occassionally--a whole band would be beyond my wildest dreams.

I'm still not clear on how selling bands to people can be a fund raiser. How do you get people to be sold like that? Maybe renting a band would work better, but still the cost would eat up any potential profits.

I don't know about that. I think "Feed 'em and they'll play" is still a pretty good working principle. Throw in a few beers and they'll play all night.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-05 AT 09:49 AM (EST)]Not to seem overly critical, but I dislike them as well; [link:www.trendwhorebracelets.com|this] just about sums it up for me.

Oh yeah, use the medium to make fun of the medium. I like it.

Reminds me of back in the early 80's when I was in Boulder, Co. and there were Rashneeshees everywhere, each with a large medalion with a picture of Rashneesh in it.

A friend of mine got hold of one of the medalions and wore it around, but with his own picture in it.

Haha.

HashTaff,

No, serious I think it's a great idea and like Foster said you don't have to wear them.

"you don't have to wear them"

So what's the point?

If smitten by some irresistible urge to give, why not just send money? That way some mug (if one could be found) would be spared the task of ordering, buying, distributing, banking... For a small return after tax, postage, suppliers' profit margin, etc.

Let's see now; the minimum order would probably be 500, at a cost of around £450, of which you'd sell maybe 50... 20...? A dozen...?

Yep - sounds like a great idea.

Tell you what: if you have that much spare cash lying around, I'll give you my Paypal account number and you can shove some in there!
