I've had good experience with Johnsons. (A dobro, a uke and a Tricone.) They've got resonators that can be had in that price range as well as cheap flattops. One good place to find them at a good price is: http://www.mandalaymusic.com/

Oaktown, huh?

I'm just up the road in Albany.

Last time I was there, Thin Man Strings on Alameda Island had a pretty good selection of Johnson resos.

The standard advice seems to be: for slide, get the deadest, crappiest, warpedest, plywood-topped guitar you can find.

Funny thing is: (most) everyone says this, then we all go out and buy the brightest, most responsive, shiniest, fanciest thing we can afford!

If you want to try slide (course you do, you got a soul ain't you?), then find any old thing to start with. A neck like a banana is an advantage, and you don't care about the frets 'cos you just found out why the gods gave you a pinky!

You know, some smart guitar maker could capitalize on that by making a really crappy, dead guitar with a fancy marketing campaign extolling the virtues of its "slide enhanced technology" and charging a potload of money for it. ;)
