Houndog, you asked for it...
So who is the best blues bass player ever? I couldn't figure out how to start a poll so here are my candidates, feel free to comment:
1- Willie Dixon...I don't think anyone will argue with him being included in the list.
2- Ernest 'Big' Crawford...Those early Muddy Waters sessions alone justify his place in blues bass history.
3- Ransom Knowling...KING of the slap bass. Check out Robert Nighthawk's 'Bricks in my Pillow'(Delmark). Wipe your chin.
4- Jack Myers...Easily the most inventive electric bass player ever. Check out his work with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells in the early 60s.
5- Jimmy Lee Robinson...though better known as a guitarist, do yourself a favor and check out the session he did with Eddie Taylor on Vee-Jay. He played so high up the neck, the bass sounds like an African drum. Amazing.

Ok. Not the Best Blues Bass Players...Costa's Biggest influences...
I'm not really familiar with any of those guys (except Willie Kent, who is great).
I also should mention that all the guys on my list are Chicago cats cause that's my fave kind of blues...there are others that have influenced me, but not as much.

Add in Mack Thompson(sp?) who played with Magic Sam.

But then anything involving Magic Sam is good!

Yip,
I know it's obvious but Wille Dixon played great simple lines which set the base for some great tunes.
I like his small threesome combo stuff .

On the Britland front ...Andy Fraser put down my fav bass line on Free's "Alright Now"...not bad for a 17 year old !

Norman Watt-Roy is probably the most dazzling bass player I have seen ...( Ian Dury /Blockheads) ...the man never halts..!

adios,
Lovat.

The list would not be complete without a nod for Larry Taylor...

Taylor is a veritable institution and it would almost be easier to list who he HAS NOT played with. He specializes in the fretless electric bass and has enhanced the work of these artists -

Al Blake, Albert King, Canned Heat, Charlie Musselwhite, Harvey Mandel, Hollywood Fats, John Hammond Jr., John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza and Tom Waits, to name just a few.

Check the link for the complete list to really be astounded.

There are so many great players such as Larry Graham, Jim Feilder, B.B., Bill Church,Peter Cetera, Oteil Burbridge,Greg Lake and then there are players like Ray Brown, Vic wooten, Stanley Clark, Josquin Des Pres, Jaco Pastorius, the list just goes on and on but when you ask for BLUES BASS PLAYERS names like Barry Okley comes to mind and many others but today I would say sitting at the top should be someone who not only plays great harmonic foundations, but also sets the attitude of the style, enough of this small talk my vote is not for me even though I play this way. My vote is for Jerry Jammott. Check him out. The list does go onand on look at Tommy Shannon, and last but not least I can,t recall his name but he played with Jonh Mayall early 70's awesome would not play with a drummer.

I'll put a relative unknown with big creds up there : Rollo Radford from Siegal Schwall band. After all, the percussion side of this rhythm section is Sam Lay. He may be a little too funky for some, but I like him. http://www.chamberblues.com

I'll kick in for Jerry Jamontt. He played with King Curtis's band. Listen to Memphis Soul Stew. You better be a damn good bass player if you have to play with drummer Bernard Purdee. They also did a lot of Aretha's 70's cuts.
