Worst

Why not have a Worst thread. Most overrated guitar, harp ,vocals etc. I guess that would be a bad idea. They'd be lots of mad folks. But I've got a list ready just in case. Ouch

Well we did have a 'blues guitarists and wankers' thread going a while back:

Maybe you could add a name or two to it :)

"Why not have a Worst thread. Most overrated..."

Most versions of the maudlin "Hard Times Killing Floor..." especially the whining Skip James'; the song is saved from total self-pitying yuckness by Terry Garland.

BF, you've GOT to be saying that just to pick a fight...

Skip James is one of my absolute heroes or, perhaps, "Blues Idols"

Hi, Allan - I just hate that damned song, and James singing it especially (ChrisThomasFordMaddoxBrownCadburySchweppes...Whatever, comes a close second).

Didn't say I dislike other stuff recorded by Skip James.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-03 AT 09:41 AM (EST)]Well, I never...His singing is excellent, it is a tortured cry of loss(no puns please) and his version of Hard Time Killing Floor is the original and best :9 Only my own opinion of course...

Is that the song that Enid is listening to in Ghostworld? That song is most excellent!

Note to self - MUST get recording of that song.

I really love that song...and think it's pretty high on the "haunting chill" scale of great blues recordings(like, say, "Dark was the night" or "Hellhound on my trail"

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-03 AT 06:21 PM (EST)]Nope - hate the bloody thing. Gives me the willies. Not overly impressed by Mr James, anyway, now I've had a re-listen to some more of his stuf.

Mind you, Mr Lummox has just flagged up a post headed with the name of someone who I really would cross the road to listen to. So I'm going there right away!

PS: I think that "The Worst" idea is good. There are plenty of sacred cows out there for the enthusiastic iconoclast (and metaphor mixer) to play with - can I put in a word for Bukka White, next?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-03 AT 05:48 PM (EST)]Well what's your worst blues thing, mg?

Besides, it's not SJ, per se, but just him singing that God-awful song! It's become the blues equivalent of... well, quite a lot of Vivaldi, especially the 4 seasons thing. (But fortunately, you don't hear it in elevators or when "on hold"!)
