Zappa Fans alert!!

Postby david » Sun Aug 21, 2005 5:47 pm

This isn't blues, but I didn't know where else to stick this.

One of the pieces of information I picked up this weekend is that Frank Zappa's kids are putting together a band to be called The Zappa Family Band to tour and play Frank's music, as well as some of their own. My understanding is that Dweezil will be playing guitar and older brother Ahmed will be singing.

I heard this from a guy that turned down being in the band because of the practice committment: six hours per day, six days per week, for at least five months prior to starting the tour, just like Frank did with his bands.

If nothing else, it ought to be tight.

It'll be interesting to hear what they come up with.

They've just got to include Moon Unit's art...I don't think she can sing!

There was a lot going on when all this was being discussed, and I was trying to pay attention to all the conversations at once. But, I don't remember Moon Unit's name being mentioned.

She may have never gotten over having done the "Valley Girl" record.

Ahmed CAN sing. As far as I'm concerned he's the one that got the Zappa genius. He's one funny sombich too. Dweezle just has the name, and plays guitar alright.. nothin' special though. Ahmed inherited the talent in the family.

Ahmed also does the best Tom Jones imitation of anyone on the planet, and Jones agrees. Tom Jones used to hang out at Zappa's house when Ahmed was a kid.

Please don't take this wrong, but what did Zappa do that was so great? The only thing I can name is Don't You Eat That Yellow Snow.

Help me out. Maybe this could be an era that I was absent or was abducted by alliens.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-05 AT 10:41 PM (EST)]Have you listened to much of it? Many of his records were pretty much for the few and the proud, but he also did several that were phenomenal for their musical prowess. Not just the guitar playing but the composition.

Give "One Size Fits All" a listen. It may not be your cup of tea at all. Zappa's music was, bottom line, a state of mind. In your face, irreverence with no body's sacred cow was off limits.

But, when the ol' boy got off that stool and picked up his guitar every body took notice. In his words, "I figure the odds be 50/50, I just might have something to say." And he was most articulate via his guitar.

I have no idea how his kids compare, but my friend tells me that Dweezil is a phenomenal guitarist (not just a guitar player), and he has played with some of the best.

And he DID have something to say.

I'm the Slime
by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted, I'm obsessed and deranged
I've existed for years but very little has changed
I'm a tool of the government, and industry too
for I am destined to rule and regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious, but you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious with the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get; have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out from your TV set!

You will obey me while I lead you,
and eat the garbage that I feed you
until the day that we don't need you
don't go for help, no one will heed you.
Your mind is totally controlled,
it has been stuffed into my mold
and you will do as you are told
until the rights to you are sold

That's right folks, don't touch that dial!

I am the slime from the video,
oozin' along on your living room floor
I am the slime from the video,
can't stop the slime people look at me go!

My old drummer, Jimmie Carl Black, the original drummer for FZ & TMI, will be having fits. Jimmie and the band got robbed by zappa. He claimed to write many songs that the band wrote collaboratly. They took him to court, and 20+ years later, right after zappa died, the settled. Jimmie got very little. This was done months before the family sold the songs to I think Sony, for millions. Music is a dirty business....... Walter
