Best what from a what???

A discussion of the blues for blues lovers and fans.

Best what from a what???

Postby badfinger » Tue Jul 29, 2003 8:14 pm

I keep seeing this forum; it’s there just before I click on “Read New”, and, occasionally there after I click on “Read New”.

I never bother to browse it. No particular reason. I can't say I'm particularly interested in what anyone else thinks is THE best line in a blues, or any other kind of song.

But, this afternoon, a totally different reason came to me.

A clue is in the way most people here tend to talk about blues “songs” – even, on a couple of occasions, when talking about instrumental pieces. On the other hand, I realise, I almost invariably talk about blues “tunes”.

That’s it – for me, they’re tunes, not songs, and so “best line” is meaningless. I suppose this relates to having been an instrumental musician from the age of 7, but only recently tried to make meaningful sounds with my mouth. (Well, that’s one of the problems with blues, ain’t it – I mean, you sit/stand there with a guitar round your neck, and pretty soon you’re expected to do something other than just play it.)

So, instead of a “Best Line From A Blues Song”, I give you a candidate for “Best Phrase From A Blues Tune”.

It’s a simple little phrase, not too hurried, and a little spiteful in tone. When it works well (and like all things, especially simple things, it can go wrong) I get a kick out of playing it.

It goes: “deeeeeeeya, doodly-bum....dee dah-de-de daaaaah.....”

I didn’t really think that could work, so I posted it here:

I won’t say what the tune is that I use it in.... And no prizes if anyone guesses correctly.
