Howlin' Wolf

Postby kr236rk » Sat Dec 26, 2009 1:27 am

Hi,

Can anybody tell me what gave the incredible guitar sound on Howlin' Wolf's 'Moanin' At Midnight' track (1951) please?

Thanks

Ric

You're right, it was Willie Johnson. Apparently Hubert Sumlin didn't join him till about 1954.

If you haven't already, check out Howlin' Wolf - "The Definitive Collection" - Geffen/Chess CD, digitally remastered....

This is a bit off topic, but:

Digital remastering can be awful, if it's a recently remastered CD...

I don't know about this Howling Wolf CD, but on others they compress them and turn them louder, put a limiter on the output (so that it can't get above that level, and turn it up before it's made a cd)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war should give you a clue...

I have some of the other Wolf reissues on CD and compared the clarity through headphones song for song....sounds good to my ears...released 2007 from Chess masters etc.
