Benefit for a Friend, North Little Rock, 9/19

we're pretty well past the cold we had last week, so it's time to do something again!

despite a bit of scratchy throat, we rehearsed last evening and came to the conclusion that we are able and of course willing to do a set saturday.

here's the thing: our friend Vanessa, who owns Parrot Beach Cafe, her daughter Samantha was in a bad car wreck some months ago. she suffered grave injuries and who knows what the medical bills amount to but it's huge. Vanessa lost business since she had to close the cafe and stay with her daughter at hospital most of the times for a couple of months, opening for the weekly jam and not much else during that time. i'm not even sure she has the cafe open much even now that Sam is home from the hospital. Sam is married and they have a child under 2 years old also. so child care is in the equation also.

so some of Vanessa's friends planned this benefit for Samantha and asked us last month if we'd be willing to do an opener set. which of course we said yes, and will be doing. along with us is a pretty good lineup of local talent, blues, rock, and in between. the day kicks off at noon and there will be 1 hour sets all the way up to 11 p.m. saturday. i expect there may be a jam at the end of things.

the door cover is a measly 5 bucks. any and all are invited out to catch a full day of music for a real necessary cause.

Parrot Beach is located at 9611 Macarthur drive, North Little Rock. see you there, or send good thoughts!!

our set- at noon last saturday- went off without a hitch. gear worked great, we went through our set nearly flawlessly, and the few who were there that early seemed to enjoy what we did. we couldn't stick around, Jo had an event to cover for the newspaper she works for, but from what i've heard the benefit was pretty successful. folks began showing up in numbers at 7 or 8 that evening and the place was packed all night.

tomorrow we're headed for the farmers market downtown to busk for a while. may be a bit chilly starting out but we need to get a good spot early. there are only 4 or 5 spots where busking is allowed and interest seems to have picked up this season, so there's a little competition. last time we were down there, we did make a few very nice tips even on the back side of the market. most people who passed us were headed to or from their cars and weren't inclined to stop and listen. but one gal and her daughter did stop and dropped a five in our case, another guy dropped a $2 bill!

next event we're planning to be at is the ABHF in helena in a couple of weeks. we're gonna stock up on warm sleep gear this time and hopefully not chill our tender parts this year! recent year there saw us huddled in the car by 3 or 4 a.m., headed for the only warm place open, the casino just across the river! it sure sucks not getting good rest when you're at a fest like that.

i have an application to send off so we can have a spot to busk at on cherry street this year. should be a good weekend!

Glad it went well for you.
I've been asked to open a benefit in November.
Plenty of time to panic between now and then.
