Hi Pastor Harmonica: thanks for the reply! I agree with you. I believe by just being truthful with your life and instrument, the right people come around you both for learning and teaching. I am now a special education teacher at the HS level. I always have some young kids coming by when their guidence counselor tells them my backround. That is always fun. So far, none have stuck around long. They are all amped up with the current music stuff. That is fine. Maybe something will trigger something down the road. What is that saying?- when you are ready to learn, a teacher appears- or something like that. Walter

most players think too much about positions rather than a good sound outta that harp.if you get a
good sound on 2nd pos.and know some good licks you can -play 1,2,3,and 4th pos. all you really have to do is
rearrange the licks,than improv. say 3rd pos. play 1chord off 4draw,4 chord off 2 draw and 5 chord off 6 draw...
these are root notes,so look up the root notes in different pos. and play blues as usual...
you would be suprised how easy it is. :

richard sleigh also does a cover of "play with fire" and it's posted on youtube also. in 5th position. i have worked with it and gotten close on harp. wife has put it on the back burner for now. she has a lot to learn guitar-wise and we're working to get ready for the blues challenge next weekend.

different positions will give you a whole new sound unlike most garden variety 2nd position wailers. i'm not knocking a particular player or position here, my own experience has been that after years of staying in 2nd, i finally did "get it" re 3rd. this caused me to revisit both 1st and 2nd psoitions along the way in recent years.

howard levy plays every single thing he does on a C diatonic harmonica using draw bends and overblows (i think). check out his work with bela fleck sometime.

with enough study and practice i imagine one could do some very unique stuff in other positions. me? i'm not that motivated past 3rd except in special cases. the first 3 give me enough variety for the moment at least.

3rd position is more versatile to me for not only blues but jazz and country also. i just hears a piece on local blues radio yesterday that flat killed me. it was george "harmonica" smith doing a 3rd position instrumental of "i left my heart in san fransisco". absolutely flawless. amazing.

truth is, i only really began seeing some of the great possibilities when i began getting the hang of 3rd position.
