Magic Dick

I had the great fortune to catch Magic Dick in concert this past week, get his autograph and chat with him for a short time. Here he is hitting the # 10 blow bend on Whammer Jammer-

Dick is 61 years old now and readily admitted on stage that it takes him longer to recover and catch his breath these days. The 3-4 minute dialogs between songs attested to that. For you gearheads, he was playing through a battle worn Hohner Bluesblaster straight to a Fender re-issue Blues Deville (black tolex). That's it. No fancy effects, just the awesome compression he gets from his hand cup and throat vibrato. His cup was so airtight that just by opening one or two fingers he could significantly change his tone. The harps appeared to be Marine bands, at least they all had wooden combs.

Afterwards, he told me that the stage amp was provided by the tour package he was part of and not his rig of choice. He said his favorite stage amp was a red knob Fender Twin. His is at home in Boston and in need of some service. He seemed like a nice enough guy but was obviously eager to get the meet and greet over with so he could chill out.

Cool stuff !
