I have started taking over partial bass duties in our garage band when the regular bassist is up for vocals. I play guitar a bit though am primarily a harp player so can play basic riffs/base notes/walking lines etc but am really quite enjoying it and would like to improve.
Can any of the lowdown plank spankers out there recommend a good book/cd or dvd for beginner bass players.

Bass is easy, just remove 1/3 of your brain and you'll do fine... :P

Jump 'n' Blues Bass by Keith Rosier. Electric & Upright Bass. It has a good CD with it (sorry not a dvd)but only $14.95. Bass is in one chanel of stereo so you can turn off the bass player & play along. I have enjoyed it a lot. Has also got some good info on setting up a bass, tone & different blues styles. Hal Leonard is the publisher.
Keep on Thumpin'

I've never got along learning from books .. don't have a video or dvd player
however the 'Bass Bible' by Paul Westwood is very informative and includes
2 CDs..... the book covers just about every style imaginable
it's quite easy ... for practise ... to load up a music CD (or whatever) ... turn down the bass control on the hi-fi 'n play along ...

i find the bass a facinating instrument

enjoy the journey

Thanks si, played at band practice last night and both the drummer and second guitarist went out of their way to tell me I was playing good! I had a blast.
