have you seen the new Regal resonator acoustic electric bass guitar? prety cool. it looks like (has the body of) a regular regal chicago blues, only with a long slim bass neck and a big fat pickup. has a couple knobs and an input jack like a strat. theres one on ebay right now (sorry, i dont know how to make links) and if you go to the folk of the wood website, theres a more detailed description, plus a few sound samples, so you can hear it for yourself. kind of a nice ringy-chimey thing. if i had a spare $450 or so just lying around, id pick up on it. might make for a fun toy. i wonder if anyone will use a slide on it...

WOuld that mean that someone's actually designed an acoustic bass guitar that's actually audible when unplugged? About time! That thing would actually be useful when camping.

Just heard a new Fender one at the store. A four string bass on a regular wood-bodied spider chassis. I was surprised how good it sounded played acoustically.

If you can find one, the old Guild B-30 has a great acoustic tone.

I've played one of these resonator basses. In fact the bass I played is the same as the Regal but rebadged. IMHO they sound like shite (as you would imagine from a resonator). Far too tinny with no bottom end. Save your money for the six string resonator and stick with either an electric solid body bass or if it is an acoustic bass sound you are after be a man and get an upright.

Just got back from travelling. Thank you for your comments Badfinger (I think). My comments stand but I just reread my post. My apolgies I was a bit OTT. As everyone knows bass players are lovers not fighters ;-)

I'd have to agree based on sound/video samples, that those reso basses sound pretty hollow and bad.

Our bass player bought one of the regal reso basses for acoustic jams, in search for some volume. He sent it back, it really did suck acoustically. He has a cheapo AXL beater acoustic bass now, and it actually has a more and deeper volume.

Not at all - I was just endorsing your sentiments!

I keep waiting for Ricochet to jump in about his search for an upright Johnson (bass, that is).

National has discontinued their resonator basses as of 2006. You have to order them special order and so they cost more.

A good friend of mine plays bass in a 80's rock cover band. He has a nice collection of various basses at his home and one of them is a resonator bass, can't remember the brand, but it has a fantastic sound.
