iPhonemazing Grace!! Cool mini studio found and used!!

Hey guys!!

I just bought an iPhone and I have to tell you about this new discovery! (For me, brand new ..)
As a new iPhone owner it's like a new world's just been opened, this is an incredibly useful little computer, ok, telephone ..

Check out the program Four Track:

Image

Well ...
I've downloaded this app, and it is sick ... Insane ...
Coool !!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, highly recommended to all iPhone users out there, this app is AWESOME!!! :D

A tiny clip here with a song recorded on my iPhone!
Hehe ..

It took like 20 minutes to record it all, the number of channels is 4, I will try to bounce over to 6 or 8 channels in total another "session"

Just the phone and headphones were used, the mic is the one built in.
The voice distorted a bit, hard to find the proper distance right away without testing first, LoL!

Amazing Grace my way, with an external quality pickup you could probably do really good recordings, great for the songwriter who wants to put together an idea.. Remember this is really, really just for the fun of it, a crazy jam......

This is heard in the mix:
Levin 1931 guitar banjo in standard.
Silvertone 12-string 1960's, open C.
Duolian 1933, open C.
Plus my tired voice!

Straight to the computer, no EQ or fixing/mixing with the file...

Now we are up to 8 channel use!
Not so much more hiss but I've managed to get egg-shaker, foot-stomping and two backing voices into the mix! :D
Everything just to test the possibilities for recording with the iPhone....!!

Only had to adjust the panning and volume on each channel, then press the button BOUNCE, hey presto, you have two new channels to play with ..

Foot-stomping was a high-tech thing, put down the phone on some bubble wrap on the floor beside the foot and stomped away, haha!

Vocal choirs were recorded in the kids room while I looked after our 11 month old dughter ..
There were a few retakes due to all the toys that were thrown to the floor, followed by laughter, hehe ..

Thats defently cool. So you think a external mic would do a lot better? Im new to the "i" world, so not sure whats out there for these things.

Sounds like it would be perfect for me. Im still at the beganing stages of my music life[ saldy I started late, and dont have the time I would have when I was younger :| ], so Im not looking to record to play to others... but just when I get a good tune going durning a pratice, or a good riff, or something, I can record it so I dont forget it.

In theory a good condenser mic should give a huge improvement to the sound as the built in mic is optimized for speech.
That means they've cut off a bit of treble and bass.

There's the gadget called Guitar Jack which allows you to use two inputs at the same time! I'll try some different mics and see what happens..

I'm waiting to get the jack right now from the US..

I'm really, really interested to see if I can get the quality enough to make an entire album using the iPhone as my "studio" haha!

Made this video clip with the two songs I've recorded so far, sounds pretty good for a telephone!

I'm happy you like it, I was very surprised as well when I heard the first result..
A bit strange to be able to carry the studio around in the pocket, hehe...

Have now begun to record with the Sonoma Guitar Jack connected to the phone and using a large diaphragm condenser mic!

Seems to be an awesome sound quality, sounds very natural and clear. Been doing some tracks with a double-bass for starters.
Will add a lot of acoustic instruments..

And I can reveal that the project not only aims to record with the phone but the songs are a bit unusual, hehe..
I've gone back to my own "roots", old hard rock..

The idea is to get the music from my youth to sound more like the rootsy blues I'm playing now, delta style acoustic.. O::)

So far it feels very inspiring, completely new and rootsy versions of songs such as:
Walking in the shadow of the blues by White Snake,
Stormbringer and Soldier of fortune by Deep Purple,
Back in Black by AC/DC,
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, etc, etc... :D

I'm having a blast arranging and recording, folks!

More info and songs to come..

That IS amazing. First off, nice work! Second, WTF... a phone does this?!?!

I gotta move out of the 20th century, that's sooooo yesterday.

Yeah, WTF was my first impression when I tried this stuff out!!
And now when I've got this little cool interface that allows me to use some really good mics, the quality of the sound is staggering!(for a phone, that is)

More to come!
