some new banjo tunes..

Postby boogiechillun85 » Thu Nov 03, 2005 5:11 pm

Felt the need for it, so I recorded two banjo tunes this morning. They're both first takes of some old appalachian songs. "Sugar Baby," and "Coo Coo Bird." So head on over to my soundclick and have a listen and let me know what y'all think.

Doggone man!!! You got it going on. I really dig yo' style! I've been working with a banjo picking buddy of mine lately and it's been a real eye-opener. I'm really enjoying trying to play dem banjo licks on guitar.

Keep up the good work, you going places son!

That was one of the more interesting ways I've gotten a comment on here.. lol..
But thanks! I've actually found my banjo stuff rubbing off on my guitar playing.. like, I'm starting to clawhammer some stuff when I play my songs.
Which explains why I have no fingernails.

High and lonesome. Yup, that's old timey music as good as I've ever heard it Jim. I always loved frailing banjo over the Scruggs-style fingerpicking. Great tunes - do you know Little Birdie or Saro Jane? Interesting how much it sounds like really old Blues - I could hear that and Charley Patton and Henry Simms doing "He's Running Wild" at the same party. And the banjo did come from Africa.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-05 AT 07:19 PM (EST)]Thank you very much! My personal blues guitar took a detour this summer, forming a group with friends, playing country banjo. I've discovered a real blues machine with my banjo, and it's become my instrument of choice for playing with the guys, or playing blues at home. It's awesome to hear someone who really knows how to do it. Thanks again!

I probably do know the songs you're talking about, but by different names. That's the only problem with this music, no one has one title for it.. lol.. I jam on Sara Jane with a fiddler friend of mine..
Little Birdie? It sounds familiar, but I can't place it. Toss some lyrics my way?

It's an original, so I don't think there's any sheet music available for it. ;)
It's all in E standard.

I guess I'm making up for lost time, but I just added another song to my soundclick. An old tune called "wish I was a mole in the ground." I guess it's not really "blues" per se, but it's close enough that it shouldn't alienate anyone on here. ;)
It's another banjo number. Funny, cause I've written about five songs in the last few weeks on guitar, but none on banjo.. and yet I'm only recording banjo songs. Maybe later this week I'll put some of the new ones up.
