I know hendrix endorsed the 10-38 set and his strings look pretty thin in the woodstock dvd.

I currently use 11's on the strat now and they are grest. I have 12's on a Les Paul and they're pretty husky

In reading the link below, much music was written to a totally different "standard" becaused the instriments were tuned up or down to the "standard" of the time.
Also the "why" of the changes is interesting.

Interesting to note that their only listed 6-string "Hawaiian Guitar" tuning was the old standard A Major, a.k.a. Open A. That was the usual lap steel tuning in the early days, so much so that many lesson books with tab didn't even mention the tuning.

If you go there, go the Strat section and do a search. There have been other discussions also.

Also info shows that early Les Paul necks were thicker because that shipped with 14's!
