Alternatively, play a DADGAD piece in open D without transposing for instant sadness.

Dm --- low to high - DADF#AD - Skip James, Bentonia... Bukka White and lots of others
Gm... yep, Gm. low to high ... DGDGBbD... I've used this one on a few of my CD's and it really produces a deep
blues sound.
D6 ... low to high - DADF#BD... lap folks use this one a lot for that western swing sound. However, I like going from
the D tuning to this one in the middle of a song for a special contrast.
