I'll also add that I think the mechanism of the cone(s) and bridge is what really determines the way a reso sounds [...] Basic body material (wood vs metal) probably colors the sound a lot - the type of wood or metal probably has a much smaller effect.

Like on a flattop, the back is a secondary sound board, and the bracing and materials apparently have quite an effect. I base my comments on...

I had never heard a wooden tricone until just recently

Here's mine, built by another forum member, DougTheSlug (aka Doug Larson - he's currently inactive here, sadly):

any update on this Freeman? Looks unreal so far.

The finish is on and it needs another week of cure before I do the final color sanding and buffing. Frets were leveled and crowned last night, all the brightwork is done, neck angle is set but won't be bolted on until the buff is done. I figure I'm two or three weeks away, but I never like rushing this part of a build - in my opinion setup, fretwork, the nut and things like that are the crowning touch of playability. Besides, I'm heading to nevada rock climbing so that will give the finish a little longer to cure....

If people are interested I took a lot of pictures during construction and I could do a little build thread.

I figure the Dopyeras did all that by some inspired try-and-see.

When I finish this critter I will own one of each type of bridge/cone configuration. Maybe what I should do is find a nice graduate student who needs a thesis topic and do some Chlandi patterns of each one (I'll let her work out the details of how to get the glitter to stay on the cones). We can publish this in some scholarly work and become famous and rich.

Meanwhile I'm going back out to the shop and make some sawdust.
