Train to Rock 'N Roll City with Headliner Pinetop Perkins
at Jon R. Hunt Plaza Located in Front of The Morris Performing Arts Center

Headliner Pinetop Perkins – considered the most famous blues pianist of all time –
returns back to South Bend at age 93. Before moving to Austin, Texas, in 1999, he lived in LaPorte, Indiana, and made numerous appearances in South Bend during the mid to late 90’s, igniting the local blues scene. Local blues musicians were tickled to be in the presence of a legend!

Pinetop Perkins is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing. He has made a living playing blues since 1926 and is widely regarded as one of the best blues pianists. Pinetop created a style of playing that has influenced three generations of piano players and will continue to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.

Born Willie Perkins, in Belzoni, MS, in 1913, Pinetop started out playing guitar at house parties and honky tonks, and switched to piano after sustaining a serious injury that made picking a guitar painful. He started using the name "Pinetop" out of admiration for his mentor, Clarence "Pinetop" Smith and is best known for playing piano in the great Muddy Waters Band during the band’s highest career point. Pinetop and other Waters' alumni formed the Legendary Blues Band in 1980. He eventually left to concentrate on a solo career and has headlined nearly ever major showcase room in North America and most of the major festivals here and abroad.

After leaving town at age 87, Pinetop has been hard at work touring around the world, winning lifetime achievement awards and even getting Grammy nominations. This will be Pinetop’s first performance in South Bend since he left the area and will be quite the homecoming!

I developed a nice friendship with Pat who manages and cares for Pinetop, she also manages Willie "Big Eyes" Smith who played drums in Muddy's 1970s band. Pat told me that they are moving to Austin, TX and Pinetop will tour occasionally.

Willie now fronts his own band and is quite a harmonica player and singer. He rarely plays drums except with Pinetop and Pinetop always wants Bob Stoeger on bass, if possible.

From the information that was posted here on BRB several months back I was able to make Pinetop laugh. One late morning Pinetop and I just happened to be outside and talking together. I told him, "I just want to shake your hand one more time as the only man I know that was hit by a train in his car and survived." Pinetop got the biggest laugh out of that.
