I hadn't listened to any of those recordings since you first put them up - you've had some cool experiences, just since you started recording!

I'm probably going to be going with Protools LE, which I'll be recording into with just the stage mics I have around here for a while. Long term, I'm looking to get a pair of good recording mics and a tube preamp as well.

I'm hoping to keep the recording setup about that simple.

Rocky was a trip. He knew he was dying and just wanted to go out playing. That recording set up sounds like a good one for you. I wanted to share this. If it is already old news for you, maybe it will help someone else in their recording gear quest. My biggest problem has been being able to try out gear before buying it. By this I mean comparing it to what I have, in my room, hooked up with my gear. The more I learn, the more I realize this is essential. I recently bought a almost new universal 610 tube preamp. These are leaning to the lower high end preamps. I hooked it up with 2 AKG414 mics and to my amazement, a $200 RODENT1A I have laying around sounded much better with my voice and guitar. I keep a close eye on craigs list. I got the 610 on there for $500, and can easily sell it on ebay for $600. This is the only way I am buying unheard recording gear from now on, so I can sell it and at least break even if it doesn't work for me. Keep me updated! Walter

Feeling hidebound with the current recording setup - I know where I want to go next, but I need to play a few more shows to raise the scratch.

In the meantime, here's a nice cupboardy version of the traditional song "Saint James Infirmary".

sounds good Dan! What gear are looking to get? Walter

PS: Have you heard this version of st james infermory? I recorded rocky with 1 mic while he was dying of lung cancer at the nursing home. It was great to get to know him. Sadly he died a few weeks after we did this session.

Check it out!

The "Tales from the Cube" idea is catching my imagination a bit - these are very rough recordings, bare bones and one take, full of mistakes and sketchy in the extreme. As I go along, I'll be posting "Matured" versions of the better songs and ditching the sketches.

Let me know if that's an improvement.
